Canel was admitted as a solicitor in September 1995 after completing his training contract at Duthie Hart & Duthie. After gaining substantial experience in criminal defence work, he was one of the founder Partners of Emery Halil & Brown that commenced operation in January 2002.
Canel has over 15 years of experience as a criminal defence litigator and remains one of the four Partners who have overseen the expansion of the firm in East London and the development of the firm’s reputation as one of the leading legal aid defence specialists.
Canel is an experienced advocate in criminal proceedings. He handles all levels of criminal defence work in the Magistrates’ and Crown Courts, as well as advising and representing defendants in the Court Of Appeal.
Canel has been instructed in criminal cases of all levels ranging from motor offences through to organised crime, the importation and supply of significant quantities of drugs, multi-million pound international fraud and money laundering, firearms offences and murder.
Canel regularly appears in the East London Magistrates’ Courts representing the firm’s clients, as well as acting as Duty Solicitor. He also has experience of Crown Court advocacy.
As well as court work, Canel is also a member of the Police Station Duty Solicitor Panel and regularly attends police stations around the country to represent clients arrested for various offences.
